Distinguished and Famous people from Derby

🎨 Donny Woolagoodja

Worrorra artist Donny Woolagoodja grew up at Mowanjum near Derby after his family was moved south from their homeland. Learning from elders, including his father Sam, he took on responsibilities for Country and the transmission of cultural knowledge. His giant Namarali Wandjina became internationally visible during the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony in 2000. Painting, cultural leadership and writing were intertwined in his work, including the book Keeping the Wandjinas Fresh. Mowanjum was central to that artistic life and to his teaching of younger generations.

📖 Daisy Utemorrah

Daisy Utemorrah moved with her community to Mowanjum on Derby’s outskirts in 1956. Fluent in Wunambal, Ngarinyin and Worrorra, she taught younger generations and worked to record languages and stories. Her writing brought childhood memories and cultural knowledge to wider audiences, including through Do Not Go Around the Edges. She was also a foundation member of the Mowanjum Dance Group. The Derby connection is a sustained community life, not a birthplace casually assigned to the nearest town. Her contribution combined the written page with teaching, performance and the responsibility of passing knowledge onwards.

🏛️ Joyce Steele

Joyce Steele spent two months at Derby in 1934 with the family of Dr Theodore Hodge, taking part in efforts to contain a deadly malaria epidemic. There she also met Wilfred Steele, then manager of Yeeda station, whom she later married. Her subsequent public life unfolded in South Australia, where advocacy for children with disabilities preceded election to parliament and service as education minister. Derby’s connection is a short but specifically documented stay, with practical involvement during a local health emergency. It should not be enlarged into a birthplace, a nursing qualification or a claim that her parliamentary career happened in the Kimberley.
