Interesting facts about Derby

Derby is a small town located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Here are a few interesting facts about this region:

1. Derby is home to the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching 1.3 km out into King Sound. This jetty was built in the 1890s to serve the pearling industry.

2. A unique feature of Derby is the incredible tidal variation that occurs in King Sound. At low tide, the water can recede up to 10 metres, revealing vast mudflats. This makes the jetty experience very unique.

3. The Boab Prison Tree is a famous landmark in Derby. This tree is a large hollow Boab which was used as a lock-up for Aboriginal prisoners in the 1890s.

4. Derby has a rich indigenous history, with the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Nyikina people being the traditional owners of the land. There are many cultural tours and experiences on offer for visitors interested in learning more about the indigenous culture.

5. One of the best ways to explore the region is by taking the Gibb River Road, a 660 km stretch from Derby to Kununurra. The road takes you through stunning gorges, river crossings and waterfalls, making for an unforgettable road trip.

6. Derby is also home to Australia's only tidal boat ramp, which is capable of handling boats up to 20 metres in length.

Overall, Derby and the surrounding region offer a unique blend of natural beauty, history and cultural experiences. It's a must-visit for anyone exploring Western Australia.
